Writers' Group: an intro & an encouragement

Currently, our writers' group meets once a month, here at the bookstore. It's the second Thursday of the month, for two hours.

We're currently meeting 6:30 to 8:30pm. If you have any questions about when we're meeting this month, check the calendar of events here at the website, or check facebook, or feel free to simply call the bookstore and ask!

Writers' Group is open to everyone who is interested in developing their writing, whether you're just a beginner, or you've published many times ... it's for people writing poetry, essays, newspaper articles, op-eds, short stories, fiction novels, nonfiction works, children's books, diaries and journals. It's just to encourage you to keep writing, and to inspire you to try new things!

We usually have some kind of prompt emailed to the group in the 3 to 4 weeks before the next meeting; this prompt is also published in the local newspapers, in a little article talking about the writers' group meeting for the month. At the beginning of the meeting, people can choose to share their response to the writing prompt. We may also do some kind of spontaneous "free write" exercise together for 15-20 minutes. The second half of the meeting is usually dedicated to a time when we break up into smaller groups for people to have the chance to share up to 3 pages of a current work-in-progress. Small group memebers will then offer gentle, constructive criticism and feedback. The small groups are not the same every time, giving writers the opportunity to hear many perspectives, and to get to know more people.

We ask that participants be at least 16 years of age. We plan on holding some activities, seminars, and groups for younger writers after we are settled into our new location. If you are interested in having your child or group of students participate in something like this, please let us know!

If you are interested in receiving the prompts for writers' group, whether you attend regularly or not, please sign up for our newsletter in the upper left corner of the website here, and indicate that you'd like to receive the writers' group newsletter, or else email Kasey at from_my_shelf@yahoo.com
